A local seed network (LSN) is a group of gardeners who save seeds and exchange them with one another. There are many types of LSN’s around Australia, from groups of friends, garden clubs to community gardens. The Hervey Bay LSN works in conjunction with the Fraser Coast sub-Tropical fruit Club as well as the Transition Town Hervey Bay project.
We are a wonderful group of people willing to share seeds, plants, grafting material, tips on growing food, seed saving and produce. Local Seed Network’s serve the vital function of conserving biodiversity at the local level.
Worldwide, the gene pool of traditional food varieties shrinks at the rate of 2.5% per year and in the last century 75% of garden varieties have disappeared (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, State of the World Report 2000).
On a global scale, it is dangerous to reduce the diversity of our food base in changing uncertain times. We need locally grown and adapted varieties as they are stronger, making them far more pest and disease resistant. This means less crop loss and lower need for pest and disease control, making the job of growing our own food so much easier.
The Hervey Bay Local Seed Network helps people to access healthy, fresh local seed, new skills, knowledge and other friendly gardeners; helping to build community and encourage local self-reliance. These are very important factors of Transition Town Hervey Bay.
